1. Rejuvenating existing follicles

Dermal papilla and related follicular cells help regulate hair growth. One strategy extracts these cells from resistant donor follicles, expands them outside the body and injects them into thinning scalp. The objective is generally to strengthen miniaturising follicles, not manufacture an unlimited supply of new follicular organs.

2. Multiplying donor potential

Follicle multiplication aims to turn a limited donor sample into a much larger supply of transplantable tissue or cells. If successful, it could relax the donor-area constraint of conventional transplantation. The key tests are whether expanded material retains its hair-inductive character and whether resulting hairs are predictable and durable.

3. Engineering follicles from cells

De novo regeneration attempts to build new follicular units from stem or progenitor cells. This is the closest match to the public idea of cloning. It also carries the greatest manufacturing and developmental complexity because the product must recreate a functional mini-organ and integrate it into human skin.
